Review: The Great Escape 2019

The Great Escape Festival took over Brighton last weekend for three jam-packed days of new music, industry networking and a whole load of shenanigans. Riding the rollercoaster that is The Great Escape takes a lot of stamina – and you might even vomit at the end.

Think of The Great Escape like a weekend in Santa Monica, but different. The rain poured early on Thursday morning, which obviously didn’t stop the party, as music industry delegates dashed between happy hours, tiny venues and invite-only brunches.

Review: The Great Escape Festival 2018

For music industry professionals, the annual trip to Brighton for three days of drinking, schmoozing and live music feels a lot like Christmas. With no Glastonbury this year and a sunny forecast, it seems everyone was ‘OOO’ for The Great Escape Festival.

Stepping off the train, Brighton’s sea breeze instantly lifts your spirits. The colourful city comes to life in the sunshine as crowds of delegates and media flock towards Jubilee Square. After breezing through accreditation and dropping our bags at a quirky Airbnb, we head straight to the end of the pier where Scottish punk band LUCIA are serving up a frantic set, with a punchy attitude.

Interview with Dermot Kennedy ahead of The Great Escape

Every so often you come across an artist who pushes a genre forward in a new direction. Dermot Kennedy is that artist. Equal parts rustic folk and soulful grit with a hip-hop influence, Ireland’s Dermot Kennedy offers his own blend of passionate, introspective songwriting.

I gave Dermot a call to talk about his latest EP, and find out what we can expect from his forthcoming set on the YouTube Presents stage at The Great Escape.

One week to go until The Great Escape 2018

Festival season 2018 is here. With only one week to go The Great Escape is getting ready to unleash the hottest upcoming artists upon Brighton, from indie, pop and rock to grime, hip-hop and jazz and everything else in between, with over 700 shows it’s safe to say the streets, beach and venues of Brighton will be alive with musical furore.

For the first time, FADER lands from the US at The Great Escape adding extra flames to the line-up by the way of South London rapper Novelist. As one of grime’s freshest MCs the independent artist will undoubtedly raise the roof as he showcases tracks from his highly-praised debut album Novelist Guy.
