Lana Del Rey’s back catalogue has plenty of stories to tell.
In 2019, Lana returned with her most indulgent body of work yet. Her sixth studio album, ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell!’, is full of personal truths and confessions, and still manages to feel universally relatable.
Ahead of the American’s upcoming performances at Coachella and Glastonbury, here are the Lana Del Rey lyrics that make us dream of festival season.
Fuck it I love you
I like to see everything in neon
Drink lime green, stay up ’til dawn
Maybe the way that I’m living is killing me
“Fuck it I love you” is the fifth single from Lana Del Rey’s sixth studio album ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell!’.
The song is a summer anthem that incorporates the ‘fuck it’ mantra that we all live for during festival season. A lot of the lyrical themes in Lana’s music are centred on living life to the fullest as ultimately we are all ‘Born to Die’. Honestly, life gets better when you embrace this carefree attitude.
Happiness Is A Butterfly
Happiness is a butterfly
We should catch it while dancing
I lose myself in the music, baby
Every day is a lullaby
Try to catch it like lightning
The title of track 13 from ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell!’ is inspired by American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne, who said “Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.”
On March 29th, 2018, Lana first teased a snippet via Instagram. The post caption read: Don’t try too hard to catch it… just dance until it finds u.
Oh my God, I feel it in the air
Telephone wires above
Are sizzlin’ like a snare
Honey I’m on fire, I feel it everywhere
Nothin’ scares me anymore
American philosopher George Addair is famously quoted as saying: “Everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear.” Lana explores that way of living on Summertime Sadness.
If time stood still I’d take this moment
Make it last forever
We all have a moment we wish we could go back to and make last forever. Festival experiences are full of these moments.
Coachella – Woodstock In My Mind
I was at Coachella
Leaning on your shoulder
Watching your husband swing in time
I guess I was in in it
‘Cause baby, for a minute
It was Woodstock in my mind
“Coachella – Woodstock In My Mind” is a song that makes allusion to Lana attending Coachella, remembering the freedom and excitement of the 1969 rock music festival Woodstock, but also realizing the difficult situations the world is facing right now.
The song was released as a standalone single on May 15th, 2017, but eventually appeared on Lana’s fifth studio album.
Next time you’re having an existential crisis, listen to this song and go to Woodstock in your mind.
