Diplo, Herve Pagez and Charli XCX give “Wannabe” a “Spicy” rework
Diplo, Herve Pagez and Charli XCX have teamed up for new song “Spicy,” a reimagining of the Spice Girls’ 1996 smash hit “Wannabe.”
In one of the most iconic Instagram captions of 2019, Charli wrote: “I looked up and spoke to the pop gods and they said “Charli – you’re the chosen one, you must honor the spice girls’ return with a mind blowing version of one of their most iconic smash hits” and I said “k no probs hun I got this” 💅🏼 then I called up diplo and herve pagez and SPICY was born.”
Herve Pagez is from the small Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. As a kid, he soaked in homegrown dancehall, educating himself to the rhythms of Vybz Kartel, Elephant Man and Sizzla, eventually teaching himself how to produce in his bedroom.
In 2012 Laidback Luke discovered Pagez and signed him to his label, Mixmash. Soon after, Diplo reached out to Pagez for an official remix of Major Lazer’s “Lose Yourself” and the two stayed in touch. Pagez now lives in Paris.
Only Charli can get away with this. The futuristic remix arrives in time for the ’90s pop icons’ current Spice World reunion tour.
