History went down on Friday 17th June as Red Bull Culture Clash 2016 cemented itself as the UK’s biggest musical showdown. Held at London’s O2, a 20,000 strong crowd bore witness to Red Bull’s ground-breaking music concept with Wiz Khalifia & Taylor Gang, UKG Allstars, Mixpak and Eskimo Dance.
As we so rightly predicted, Mixpak owned the win. But who the f#ck are Mixpak? And how did the underdog come out a clear winner? It’s time you got to know the genre and crew you’re going to be seeing and hearing lots more of as festival season 2017 rolls around.
Who Are Mixpak?
Mixpak are a 7 strong crew featuring Jamie XX collaborator and Jamaican heavyweight Popcaan (who smashed his first ever UK performance), label founder and most sought-after dance hall producer on the planet Dre Skull, King of the Dutty Wine Tony Matterhorn, British reggae master Serocee, twerk lioness Spice, plus Kranium and Jubilee.
How Did Mixpak Win?
Lots of people will tell you Mixpak won because they drew the Drake dub. That’s not entirely true. We knew Mixpak had it in the bag from the initial line-up announcement. Sound clash culture originated in Jamaica. It’s in their blood. Mixpak pushed boundaries on every round. They shocked the crowd and embarrassed their rivals. The absolute G that is Popcaan rose to the occasion speaking to the UK crowd in a way they didn’t expect. Also, NO FAKE DUBS!
Watch the winning moment.
The best kept secret is out. Expect to see lots more of Mixpak as they carry out their reign as Red Bull Culture Clash 2016 champions.
This year’s culture clash proved that it really is anyone’s game. There’s no room for arrogance. No genre is safe, no matter how incredibly popular (Eskimo Dance). Big up the London crowd for going into Culture Clash 2016 with an open mind. Leaving loyalties at the door, you cheered for who brought it on the night. And the underdog earned the respect of everyone.
